LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), Syed Khurram Ali, has said that it has been revealed that citizens’ personal data is being sold to foreign agencies.
Speaking at a press conference, Syed Khurram Ali stated that a gang involved in selling sensitive data of important individuals for a few thousand rupees had been arrested from South Punjab. He added that four individuals involved in data selling have so far been taken into custody.
According to him, investigations showed that individuals from various institutions were providing information that enabled data leaks. He said a zero-tolerance policy is in place against data leaks and the sale of personal information.
The DG NCCIA further said that all institutions are being informed to take action against those involved in selling data. He noted that sensitive data related to national security and important personalities had been sold abroad.
He added that a special committee has been formed in Karachi in coordination with the State Bank, and that various gangs involved in leaking banking and identity-related confidential information have been identified. He said individuals with access to institutional databases were involved in leaking personal information.
Khurram Ali said action is ongoing against government officials involved in data selling, adding that public awareness is essential to prevent cybercrime.
He also said that the case of Momina Iqbal is being handled by the Lahore office and will be completed in days rather than months.
Responding to a question regarding alleged delays in the case, he said the NCCIA did not delay action, adding that proceedings began as soon as Momina Iqbal arrived in Lahore from Karachi.
