PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday suspended the license of a lawyer for adopting inappropriate and abusive behaviour towards a senior judge of the court and the staff.

The lawyer, Advocate Altaf Samad, was barred from entering courts across the province and a show-cause notice was issued to him as well asking why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him. The case was referred to the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court for further proceedings.

Senior Puisne Judge Justice Ejaz Anwar issued the written order. According to the order, the matter involving Advocate Altaf Samad was sent to the Pakistan Bar Council for disciplinary action. The lawyer was representing a petitioner in a case but never appeared before the court.

A show-cause notice was issued to him asking why he was failing to fulfill his professional responsibilities. He had sought adjournment on the grounds of appearing before the Supreme Court; however, the record revealed that he had no case pending there, thus providing false information to the court.

The order stated that when the case was fixed for hearing on Monday, the court reader informed him about the case and the show-cause notice.

In response, the lawyer allegedly misbehaved with the reader and used abusive language against both the judge and the reader.

Upon being informed, the court summoned CCTV footage, which confirmed the misconduct and use of inappropriate language. Subsequently, the court suspended his license and referred the matter to the chief justice.
