LAHORE: The University of Lahore hosted the opening ceremony of the Olympic Solidarity Technical Courses for Coaches and Athletes Entourage in Fencing, a national initiative designed to raise coaching standards and align Pakistan’s fencing programme with international best practice.
The programme, organised under the Olympic Solidarity banner, brings together coaches, support staff and athletes from across Pakistan for intensive technical training. The course aims to strengthen professional skills, improve competitive readiness and build a sustainable pathway for fencing development nationwide.
The ceremony featured senior sports and academic figures, with Muhammad Khalid Mahmood, Secretary General of the Pakistan Olympic Association, attending as chief guest.
A highlight of the programme is the appointment of Jerzy Zbigniew Konsski, an experienced fencing coach from Poland, who will be based at The University of Lahore to deliver technical coaching and mentor local coaches.
Speakers praised The University of Lahore for providing modern facilities and a platform for international collaboration. They emphasised that professional sports education and coach development are essential to improving athlete performance and raising Pakistan’s profile in international fencing competitions.
Deputy Chairman Uzair Raoof reiterated the university’s commitment to youth development and sports excellence, noting that academic institutions have a key role in nurturing athletic talent and promoting healthy, structured sporting programmes.
The opening ceremony concluded with an exhibition bout that showcased the athletes’ skills and the technical themes of the course. Practical sessions will follow, focusing on coaching methodology, athlete support systems and competition preparation.
Organisers said the course will continue with hands on training modules and knowledge exchanges aimed at producing a cadre of certified coaches and better prepared athletes. The initiative is intended to catalyse further fencing activity across provinces and to support Pakistan’s long term ambitions in the sport.
