LAHORE: The Sports Writers Association of Punjab (SWAP), one of the leading representative bodies of sports journalists in the province, has formally announced its office-bearers and Executive Council for the term 2026–2030.
The newly-constituted body reflects a blend of experienced senior journalists and active media professionals committed to the promotion of sports journalism and the welfare of sports reporters across Punjab.
According to the official announcement after its assembly at the Lahore Press Club, renowned senior sports journalist Shahid Shaikh has been appointed as Chairman of the Association, while veteran sports reporter Sohail Ali will serve as President for the four-year tenure, joins him as secretary is Shahzad Malik and Asher Butt as treasurer.
The proceedings were chaired by Election Commission Qayyum Zahid, who is also advisor to the newly-elected body. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Shahid Shaikh said the Association would continue working for the protection of journalists’ professional rights, capacity-building initiatives, and the promotion of ethical and responsible sports reporting in Punjab. He emphasized the importance of unity among sports journalists and highlighted the need to adapt to the rapidly changing digital media landscape.
President Sohail Ali stated that the newly formed body would focus on strengthening relations between sports organizations and media professionals while ensuring opportunities for young and emerging sports journalists. He added that SWAP would actively organize seminars, workshops, media engagement programs, and recognition events aimed at improving professional standards in sports journalism.
Secretary Shahzad Malik expressed gratitude to all members for their confidence in the newly elected team and assured that the Association would work collectively and transparently for the betterment of the sports media fraternity. He said the Association intends to play a constructive role in highlighting sports development, athlete achievements and grassroots sporting activities throughout Punjab.
Treasurer Asher Butt said that financial transparency, institutional stability, and member welfare would remain among the top priorities during the 2026–2030 term. The Sports Writers Association of Punjab has long been regarded as an important platform for sports journalists, contributing significantly to the coverage and promotion of sports activities in the province.
