LAHORE: In a recognition of his lifelong commitment to the sport, former Davis Cup star and veteran coach Rashid Malik has been conferred with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence).

The award was presented as part of the national honours celebrating exceptional contributions to Pakistan, marking a significant new chapter in Malik’s storied career.

Rashid Malik, a name synonymous with Pakistani tennis for over four decades, has represented the nation with distinction on numerous international platforms. As a former Davis Cup player, Malik was a cornerstone of the national team throughout the 1980s and 90s. His transition from the baseline to the captain’s chair saw him lead the Pakistan Davis Cup team through several critical ties, earning respect for his leadership and tactical mentorship of the next generation.

This latest honour is an upgrade to his already impressive list of accolades. Malik was previously awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Excellence) for his initial impact on the game. The conferment of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz—the country’s third-highest civilian honor—reflects his continued and elevated influence as a sports administrator and the architect of grassroots tennis in the country.

Currently serving as the Senior Executive Vice President of the Punjab Lawn Tennis Association (PLTA), Malik has been the driving force behind the Junior Tennis Initiative (JTI). His leadership has transformed the Punjab Tennis Academy at Bagh-e-Jinnah into a hub for domestic talent, consistently hosting the highest volume of national and international junior tournaments in Pakistan.

Even in his senior years, Malik remains a formidable competitor. He recently clinched the Men’s 60+ singles title at the RLK Group ITF Masters Tennis Championship 2026, defeating Israr Gull in a dominant straight-sets final. His ability to balance high-level administrative duties with active tournament play has made him a unique and inspiring figure in the South Asian sporting community.
