LAHORE: Former national coach and Olympian Tahir Zaman has been offered the post of Director High Performance and Development and will assume a senior operational role — effectively becoming the federation’s second-in-command after the PHF president.

According to PHF insiders, Tahir Zaman has been selected to lead the PHF’s High Performance and Development wing. The role is expected to focus on elite player pathways, coaching education, talent identification, and the establishment of year-round high-performance programmes across Pakistan. Insiders say the appointment will be formalised in the coming days and that Zaman will report directly to the PHF president, placing him effectively at number two in the federation’s operational hierarchy.

The sources indicated that the new post centralises responsibility for long-term player development and elite preparation — areas Pakistan hockey has identified as priorities in recent years. Tahir Zaman is a former international and has previously served in senior coaching roles for Pakistan, bringing both playing pedigree and coaching experience to the administrative post.

The director’s remit is expected to include setting up regional high-performance centres, coordinating age-group programmes, and liaising with international partners for exposure tours and coaching exchanges.

Tahir Zaman is an Olympian and former national team coach who has been involved in Pakistan hockey’s coaching setup in recent seasons. He was appointed head coach of the national side in 2024 and has publicly advocated for structural reforms, including the creation of a permanent high-performance centre and a broader pool of elite players to restore Pakistan’s standing in world hockey. His prior coaching appointments and public statements underline his focus on long-term development and modern training methods.
