ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, while strongly criticising the government over the recent increase in petroleum product prices, said the government was continuously raising the prices of petrol and diesel. He said the government had turned petrol into a source of revenue generation and demanded that oppression of the poor be stopped.

In a statement issued on X, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said: “Today again, the prices of both products have been increased by Rs 15 per litre.” He said the government was imposing a heavy levy on the masses in the name of the international market, adding that the levy had no direct connection with petroleum product prices. Hafiz Naeem said that the government was currently collecting more than Rs 150 per litre in levy and taxes.

Terming it a great injustice to recover such heavy levies from poor and middle-class citizens, the JI chief added that students, labourers, and motorbike riders were bearing the burden of government taxes. He also lamented the extravagance of the ruling class, privileges, billion-rupee aircraft, and official protocols were continuing unchecked.
