Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has chaired a meeting to review the arrangements for collecting and disposing of offal of sacrificial animals to landfill sites on the coming Eidul Azha.
Officials said the meeting was attended among others by South Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso whereas other deputy commissioners of the city joined it via video link. Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Managing Director (MD) Tariq Nizamani, Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Rabia Syed, senior officers of town administrations, municipal commissioners, and officers from the Rangers, police and health department also attended the meeting.
The commissioner directed the deputy commissioners to personally supervise the cleanliness and offal disposal work on the occasion of Eidul Azha, and ensure special cleanliness arrangements for the religious occasion.
The SSMWB MD informed the meeting that the board had prepared a contingency plan for collecting and disposing of sacrificial animal offal. He briefed the meeting on details of the contingency plan, stating that 97 collection points would be established in all districts and their locations had been identified.
It was decided that the waste management board, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, town administrations and cantonment boards would make coordinated efforts for collecting and disposing of offal.
It was also decided that the SSWMB would finalise arrangements in consultation with town administrations and present a coordinated contingency plan in a meeting to be held next week under the chairmanship of the commissioner for the planning and arrangements for door-to-door collection of offal, transportation to collection points with the cooperation of town administrations, and onward transfer to the landfill sites, including the one in Jam Chakro.
The meeting decided that vigilance committees would by headed by the deputy commissioners to prevent complaints of offal being thrown on streets and roads and unauthorised skinning of animals. The meeting also discussed the issue of dumping of offal and garbage in the drains and decided that action would be taken against those committing such act. It was decided that the Section 144 would be enforced to prevent dumping of offal in drains.
It was decided that the deputy commissioners would supervise offal collection work and all the departments concerned would work in coordination with them. The SSWMB and town administrations would include the vehicle numbers and drivers’ names and numbers in their contingency plans.
