MANSEHRA: The final of a cricket tournament, held at a ground surrounded by the Indus River and high mountains, attracted a record crowd for the first time in the history of Torghar.

“This inter-district tournament’s final match drew a record number of spectators since Torghar’s tribal status was changed to a settled district through a presidential order in 2011,” Rubnawaz Yousufzai, one of the organisers of the tournament, told reporters on Tuesday.

As many as 32 teams from Torghar, Shangla and Battagram districts participated in the event, which was organised on a self-help basis at the Abaseen Cricket Ground on the Indus riverside in Judbah, the district headquarters.

“The Indus River, which bifurcates Hazara and Malakand divisions, is also one of the main attractions of the tournament,” Yousufzai said.He added that two players each from other parts of the Hazara and Malakand divisions also played in all 32 teams.

“The final was played between teams from Battagram and Shangla, with the former winning the trophy along with a cash prize of Rs100,000,” he said.
