Islamabad:To modernise the federal capital’s transportation network, the government has officially launched a major infrastructure initiative designed to establish a direct link between Margalla Road and the motorway.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the construction site on Tuesday to personally review the progress and inspect ongoing activities. During his visit, the minister received a comprehensive briefing detailing the technical scope and strategic importance of the development, which is expected to drastically improve connectivity and alleviate chronic traffic congestion within the city.
The development spans a 2.7-kilometer corridor and features the construction of a three-lane carriageway on both sides, complemented by a two-lane service road to manage local traffic. The project’s engineering blueprint includes an interchange on GT Road, two underpasses, and a dedicated bridge, all of which are intended to facilitate a seamless flow of vehicles.
Minister Naqvi issued specific directives to the relevant authorities to ensure the Sangjani Interchange on GT Road is completed by July 31, underscoring the government's commitment to strict deadlines. He emphasized that once operational, this route will serve as a faster and more efficient alternative for commuters traveling between Islamabad and the national motorway network.
Throughout the inspection, the Interior Minister stressed that quality, transparency, and speed must remain the hallmarks of the construction process. He instructed officials to mobilize all available resources to meet the established milestones, noting that the project is currently on track for a December 2026 completion date.
Furthermore, it was noted that the Punjab government will be responsible for a separate 2.5-kilometer segment of the corridor to ensure regional integration. The Minister was accompanied during the site visit by several high-ranking officials, including the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority, the Inspector General of Police Islamabad, and the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad.
