In the first bank heist reported in Karachi this year, armed robbers looted around Rs4 million from a private bank located on Manghopir Road and managed to escape, police said on Monday.
District West police chief Tariq Ilahi Mastoi said that five people were involved in the heist. He said that three of them entered the bank while two remained outside. The suspects overpowered the security guard upon entering, holding him hostage, and snatching his pistol and rifle, he added.
Bank officials said that Rs4 million to Rs5 million in cash was present at the counter, which the robbers took before fleeing. Police said the suspects did not reach the bank vault and no customer inside the bank was robbed either.
A crime scene unit was immediately called to collect evidence, while statements from eyewitnesses were recorded. Police are also reviewing footage from the CCTV cameras installed at the bank.
Sindh police chief Javed Alam Odho sought a detailed report from Karachi police chief Azad Khan, ordering investigation from all aspects of the case to ensure the early arrest of those involved.
