CHARSADDA: The modern walk-in tunnel farming introduced to increase agricultural productivity and protect vegetable crop from diseases in the Charsadda district in a bid to meet rising food demands.

The primary objective of this advanced cultivation method is to enable off-season vegetable production while minimising water wastage. The Agriculture Department has initiated the installation of walk-in tunnels at 20 locations across various union councils in the district as part of the first phase.

District Director Agriculture Muhammad Ibrar Khan said that the initiative aimed at countering the adverse impacts of climate change and modernising the agricultural system, marking a significant step toward smart agriculture.Through walk-in tunnel farming, the farmers would be able to grow off-season vegetables while also protecting crops from harmful pests and diseases.

The system allows temperature control and supports vertical farming, enabling higher yields in limited space along with a substantial reduction in water usage. The official added that selected farmers at the 20 sites would also receive phased training to help them effectively adopt the modern technique. In the second phase, he said that the project would be expanded to all union councils in the district.
