LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed solidarity with victims of earthquakes and other natural disasters in Pakistan and across the world, reaffirming her commitment to making Punjab more resilient on the occasion of World Day for Earthquake Victims.
In her message on Wednesday, she said she shares the grief of thousands of families affected by the devastating 2005 earthquake, adding that memories of those who lost their lives in the tragedy still remain fresh. She emphasized that improved infrastructure, comprehensive planning, and public awareness are essential to minimise the destructive impacts of natural disasters. She appreciated the inclusion of chapters on natural disasters in the curriculum under the Pakistan School Safety Framework (PSSF), noting it as a commendable step. She said investments are being made in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite modelling, while the use of modern construction technologies can help prevent damage caused by disasters like earthquakes. She highlighted that the Punjab government has taken effective measures for disaster prevention and rehabilitation.
Academy Award (Oscar) winning Pakistani-origin filmmaker and journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy called on Maryam Nawaz. The chief minister appreciated Sharmeen’s professional achievements and expertise and termed her efforts for highlighting social issues through documentary filmmaking commendable. During the meeting, Sharmeen praised Maryam for her contributions to arts and culture.
Both sides discussed the Punjab Film City project in NSIT City and agreed on mutual collaboration. The chief minister said the Punjab Film City project would become Pakistan’s first “end-to-end” media production hub. The project would provide facilities for film, television, digital media, VFX and post-production.
Sharmeen said the chief minister is doing commendable work and described her leadership as exemplary, adding that the people of Karachi also acknowledge her efforts.
