Following directives from the Sindh government’s Universities and Boards Department, a crackdown has been intensified against ghost employees and those holding dual public sector jobs at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari, where several such cases have surfaced.
According to university sources, the employees identified include teaching and administrative staff such as assistant professors, lecturers, an assistant controller of examinations, clerks and other personnel. Among them, an assistant professor, a lecturer and the assistant controller examinations are said to have remained absent from duty for the past eight months.
Similarly, an assistant along with four senior clerks have also been absent for eight months, while a sub engineer has not reported to duty for the last four months. The university administration has issued show-cause notices to the employees over their prolonged absence. Sources said that these individuals had previously been served multiple notices but failed to furnish satisfactory replies.
University officials stated that despite remaining absent, the employees continued to draw salaries and benefits amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees without performing their duties.
Meanwhile, an assistant professor, who was reportedly holding dual government employment, has resigned after depositing approximately Rs3 million with the university. A lecturer in the commerce department and a lecturer at the Premier College have also resigned from Lyari University due to dual employment. The university administration said that further inquiry is under way and departmental action will be taken against those found responsible.
