Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) officials on Monday said that a sudden power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station has raised concerns over potential disruptions to the city’s water supply system, as repair work has begun on an emergency basis to restore operations.

The outage occurred in the second phase of the Dhabeji pumping station, a critical installation that supplies a significant portion of the city’s water distribution network. The abrupt electricity failure led to a complete shutdown of operations, triggering back pressure in the system and damaging key transmission lines.

KWSC officials confirmed that two PRCC lines and one MS line were affected due to the sudden disruption, complicating efforts to maintain a consistent water flow to different parts of the city.

The KWSC’s senior officials, engineers and technical teams rushed to the site soon after the incident was reported. An immediate assessment of the damage was carried out, and repair work was initiated without delay. Authorities said that efforts are under way to restore the system as quickly as possible.

The KWSC spokesperson said that repeated, unannounced power breakdowns by K-Electric have been undermining the stability of the water supply system, adding that such outages have not only disrupted routine operations but also caused damage to critical infrastructure, increasing maintenance costs and operational challenges.

The KWSC has formally communicated its concerns to the KE management, urging them to ensure uninterrupted power supply to essential facilities such as pumping stations. Officials stressed that consistent electricity provision is crucial to prevent similar incidents and to safeguard the city’s water distribution network.

Meanwhile, a KE spokesperson said that a fault at the Dhabeji pumping station had caused the main cable fault, adding that despite the fault, power supply continued to 18 out of the 22 motors at the pumping station. “Electricity is being supplied to the remaining four pumping motors through alternative sources.”
