ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party Vice President and Parliamentary leader in the Senate Sherry Rehman has termed Pakistan’s call at the United Nations for the immediate implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) a significant and timely development for advancing regional peace and stability.

“Pakistan’s strong diplomatic stance regarding India’s alleged suspension of the water treaty has drawn considerable international attention,” she said in a statement on Friday. She said Pakistan has made it clear that respect for international agreements is essential for regional stability and sustainable peace. “Unilateral actions on shared water resources cannot be accepted,” she stated.

Highlighting Pakistan’s legally and morally sound position, she noted that the Court of Arbitration has categorically ruled that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. “Our stance is rooted in international law, and the record shows that Pakistan has always advocated lawful, rules-based conduct,” she said and reiterated that Pakistan has consistently emphasized that all bilateral disputes must be resolved through meaningful diplomatic dialogue, not unilateral or coercive measures. Given the rising risks of water-related tensions in South Asia, she stressed the critical role of international institutions in preventing escalation.

“As water insecurity becomes a growing flashpoint, the responsibility of global bodies to uphold treaties and prevent conflict becomes even more vital,” she said and noted that Pakistan has long championed peace and played a constructive role as a mediator in global conflicts. “Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, including its mediation during the US–Iran tensions, continue to receive recognition internationally,” she remarked. Commenting on regional developments, she stated that following the Operation Bunyanum Marsoo , India is facing increasing diplomatic isolation — a matter that continues to be discussed across political and diplomatic circles. She added, “The Modi government is resorting to irresponsible and reactionary tactics simply to deflect attention from its failures and the growing pressure at home.”
