LAHORE : Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has proposed establishing a model aquaponics site at the varsity to promote fisheries-related employment and support fish farmers.
He was addressing a workshop on aquaponics organised by the Institute of Zoology. Senior faculty members, researchers and representatives of relevant institutions attended the event. Dr Ali said modern education at PU would enable agriculture graduates to pursue entrepreneurship and advisory roles.
He highlighted aquaponics as an efficient method for fish breeding and growth, and stressed the need to shift towards controlled and sustainable agriculture in view of water scarcity.
He also underscored the importance of conserving water resources and improving groundwater levels.
Prof Emeritus Dr Muhammad Waheed Akhtar said PU would play a key role in training and promoting aquaponics on a commercial scale.
