RAJANPUR/LAHORE: Farmers in District Rajanpur have expressed concern over the imposition of a ban on the cultivation of tall crops along roads in the Kacha area.
According to the farmers, members of gangs that previously operated in the Kacha belt have surrendered, and they believe there is no longer a need for such restrictions. They said the ban would create difficulties for them, as they depend on these crops for their livelihood. The farmers stated that instead of facilitating them, the district administration has restricted cultivation which may lead to an economic crisis for those living in the riverine areas. They urged the government not to affect their source of income.
They said sugarcane is the most suitable crop for the area due to its proximity to the Indus River, adding that during the flood season, it helps sustain their livelihoods. The farmers demanded improved law and order measures rather than restrictions that impact their earnings.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner Rajanpur has imposed a ban on the cultivation of sugarcane and other tall and dense crops along roads in the Kacha area for security purposes. According to an official order issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, cultivation within 150 metres on both sides of identified roads has been prohibited. The decision was taken following directives from the Home Department, Government of Punjab, and recommendations from the district police officer Rajanpur. The order states that dense vegetation and tall crops along roads, particularly near the Indus River, can obstruct visibility and may be used for criminal activities, including highway crimes.
A total of 23 roads in areas falling under police stations including Bangla Ichha, Soon Miani, Shahwali, and Chakr Bahoot have been identified for the restriction.
