Islamabad:Authorities in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad imposed a sweeping security lockdown on Sunday, suspending all public, private, and goods transport until further notice amid heightened security concerns.
Major arteries across the capital were sealed with containers, the Red Zone was completely cordoned off, and 3G/4G internet services were shut down. The Metro Bus service was also halted, while all entry and exit points to Islamabad and key intercity routes were barricaded.
A high-alert security has been enforced, with around 18,000 personnel from police, Rangers, and FC deployed across the region. Public gatherings have been banned, including vehicle movement on green belts, while key sectors such as F-6, F-7, F-10, and G-6 remain under strict surveillance.
Authorities have also ordered the temporary closure of hostels, guest houses, and inns in both cities. Several educational institutions will remain closed today (Monday). The heightened security comes ahead of high-stakes talks between the US and Iran, according to reports.
In Rawalpindi alone, more than 10,000 police personnel have been deployed, with over 600 special pickets established at key entry and exit points. Officials said the multi-layered plan was activated with foreign delegations expected to arrive via Nur Khan Airbase before proceeding to Islamabad. Snipers deployed on high-rise buildings are maintaining real-time coordination with ground units.
Meanwhile, alternative traffic plan has been issued to manage movement in the twin cities. The Red Zone and its extended areas will remain completely closed to all traffic. The Islamabad Expressway from Koral to Zero Point is shut, while traffic on Srinagar Highway may be suspended intermittently.
Residents of G-5, G-6, G-7, F-6, and F-7 sectors have been advised to use 9th Avenue via Margalla Road for travel towards Rawalpindi. Traffic from Faisal Avenue to Zero Point is being diverted to 9th Avenue. In case of closures at Koral Chowk, commuters can use Srinagar Highway, Stadium Road, Murree Road, Chandni Chowk, and Rawal Road as alternative routes.
Similarly, if Club Road is closed from Park Road, traffic will be redirected towards Taramri Chowk. Citizens traveling from Bhara Kahu to Rawalpindi can use Korang Road, Bani Gala, and Lehtrar Road, while commuters from Saddar to Islamabad are advised to use Karnal Sher Khan Road, Faqir Api Road, or 9th Avenue.
