ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and 11 other countries have strongly condemned Israel’s reported decision to appoint a diplomatic representative to the self-declared region of “Somaliland”, calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Türkiye, Indonesia and Kuwait rejected the move, describing it as a “flagrant violation” of the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The ministers reaffirmed their “unequivocal rejection” of unilateral actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, stressing their continued support for Somalia’s unity and its internationally recognised government as the sole representative of its people. They further stated that such actions contravene international law, including the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and warned that they set a dangerous precedent that could destabilise the Horn of Africa.

The statement added that any such developments risk negatively impacting regional peace and security.
