The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), under Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing the city’s traffic infrastructure by extending financial and institutional support to the Karachi Traffic Management Company for the installation of smart, AI-based traffic signals on II Chundrigar Road—one of the city’s busiest commercial arteries.

Officials said that the decision was taken during a meeting of the Karachi Traffic Management Company held at the office of the commissioner, chaired by Mayor Wahab. Traffic officials briefed the participants on the current status of traffic signals across the city. They informed that more than 94 traffic signals have already been activated, with the number now reaching 95, reflecting steady progress in restoring functional traffic control systems. They emphasized the need to expand signal coverage and integrate smart, technology-driven solutions to enhance efficiency and real-time traffic management.

Recognizing the importance of intelligent traffic systems, the mayor announced a financial contribution of Rs20 million from the KMC to support the installation of smart signals on II Chundrigar Road. These advanced systems will incorporate modern technologies, including AI-based traffic flow monitoring, to optimize signal timing and improve vehicular movement in high-density zones.

Wahab said that as the custodian of the city and head of its largest metropolitan institution, the KMC remains fully committed to strengthening urban infrastructure and delivering improved municipal services. He noted that visible improvements have already been observed following the implementation of the Traffic Regulation and Control System (TRCS), and stressed the need to further expand and enhance such initiatives.

He added that a fully operational and strictly regulated traffic signal system across Karachi has the potential to resolve a significant portion of the city’s traffic-related challenges. “With coordinated efforts, modern technology, and effective enforcement, we can bring about meaningful and sustainable improvements in traffic flow and public convenience,” he remarked.

He directed the KMC to undertake immediate measures for improving footpath and lane markings along Mauripur Road, a critical route for heavy traffic movement. Furthermore, it was decided that a targeted anti-encroachment operation will be launched on Mauripur Road, in collaboration with the Traffic Police, to clear footpaths and ensure unobstructed movement.
