PESHAWAR: Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations, Shafiullah Jan, has stated that a free and independent media is the cornerstone of democracy, warning that suppressing truth only paves the way for misinformation and undermines democratic values.
He expressed these views while addressing a provincial convention on media laws, regulations, and ethics held at the Peshawar Press Club. The event was jointly organized by the Khyber Union of Journalists, Peshawar Press Club, and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists.
Shafiullah Jan remarked that journalism is a noble yet demanding profession and that journalists have made unparalleled sacrifices in the line of duty.He emphasized that Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of expression to every citizen; however, he regretted that certain legislative measures have been used as instruments to restrict media freedom.
Criticizing the federal government, he stated that during its tenure, several journalists have allegedly been sidelined for speaking the truth. He added that in the federation and Punjab, even raising issues concerning public welfare, the utilization of taxpayers’ money, or other public matters is met with undue pressure, resulting in the curtailment of media voices.
In contrast, he asserted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provides an enabling environment for free expression, where the provincial government upholds democratic norms and refrains from political victimization.
He highlighted that the opposition in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly is given ample opportunity to voice its concerns, reflecting the government’s commitment to political tolerance and inclusivity.
The special assistant stated that the provincial government responds to criticism through performance and maintains a principled stance in support of the media fraternity.Commenting on matters related to PECA and media regulations, Shafiullah Jan reaffirmed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf stands in solidarity with journalists and will continue to advocate for their rights.
Referring to recent political developments, he noted that the public gathering scheduled for April 9 was called off on the directions of Imran Khan, reiterating that PTI has always placed national interest above all else.
He criticized federal policies, stating that inadequate planning has led to rising inflation and unemployment, adding that the narrative of “Purana Pakistan” reflects a regressive approach to governance. The special assistant said that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have reposed trust in PTI for a third consecutive term based on its governance and performance.
