Sindh forms committee for local governance reforms

KARACHI: The Services, General Administration and Coordination Department of the Government of Sindh, on the directives of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, has issued a notification for the formation of a high-level committee to improve public service delivery in local government institutions.

The notification, issued on April 8, 2026, aims to enhance efficiency and governance at the local level. Officials said the committee will be chaired by the Sindh minister for local government, housing and town planning, while the secretary local government will serve as its secretary. Other members include the chairman of the Chief Minister’s Inspection, Inquiries and Implementation Team, a nominated representative of the Local Government Commission, and members to be nominated by the chairperson.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing and improving public service delivery mechanisms at the grassroots level, including union councils. Its mandate includes enhancing the quality and pace of development work, ensuring financial discipline, and promoting the efficient use of human resources.

It will also examine financial and administrative complaints related to local councils, including allegations of misuse of funds, illegal appointments, and irregularities in revenue generation. The committee has been directed to submit its final report within three months, along with monthly progress reports to the Chief Minister’s Office.

According to the notification, the secretary local government will provide secretariat support, including arranging meetings, preparing minutes, and maintaining official records.
