A tragic incident in Karachi claimed the lives of two young siblings, who drowned while bathing in a water-filled pit near the Super Highway area, police officials said on Thursday.
According to initial reports, the incident took place in the vicinity of New Sabzi Mandi, close to Hangora Goth, where a pit filled with accumulated rainwater had become a spot for children to play and bathe. The victims, identified as eight-year-old Akhtar and nine-year-old Nadia, were residents of a nearby village and had reportedly gone to the site during the day.
The SHO of the Site Superhighway Industrial Area police station, Chaudhry Nawaz, confirmed that the children drowned accidentally while bathing in the stagnant water. He said that as soon as information about the incident was received, police teams and rescue volunteers rushed to the scene. By that time, however, both children had already lost their lives.
The news of the tragedy spread quickly, drawing a large number of local residents to the site. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and grief as family members and neighbours attempted to rescue the children before emergency teams arrived.
Police officials said that the pit where the incident occurred was located on land belonging to a residential society. Such pits, often formed due to construction activity or excavation, can collect rainwater and pose serious safety risks, particularly to children. Residents in the area have reportedly raised concerns in the past about the lack of protective measures around such sites.
SHO Nawaz said the heirs of the deceased children declined to pursue any legal action, stating that they considered the incident a tragic accident. Following necessary formalities, the bodies were handed over to the family and transported to their home via an ambulance operated by the Edhi Foundation.
