KARACHI: Pakistan has secured access to the Russian market for potato exports from Punjab after Moscow eased phytosanitary restrictions imposed last year, officials said on Thursday.

Russia’s federal agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, allowed imports from April 8, initially approving three exporters: Chase International, Zahid Kinnow Grinding & Waxing Plant, and National Fruit. Additional companies may be cleared subject to compliance with Russian requirements.

The restrictions had been in place since May 2025.Shabana Aziz, head of Pakistan’s trade mission in Moscow, said more exporters are expected to be registered, adding that trade bodies are facilitating virtual business-to-business meetings to support shipments.

Pakistan is harvesting a large potato crop this season, with output estimated at about 12 million tonnes. Access to the Russian market could help absorb surplus supply and ease pressure on domestic prices, while supporting export earnings. The development follows engagement between Pakistan’s food security authorities, plant protection department and trade bodies, alongside its mission in Moscow.
