ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and the United States, demanding of PM Shehbaz Sharif government to promote dialogue, rule of law and reconciliation in domestic politics.
The opposition alliance leadership met here with its head, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai, in the chair and reviewed a host of issues -- local, regional, with special reference to Israel-US aggression on Iran and TTAP’s future line of action to ensure supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law.
The meeting underlined that reconciliation in domestic politics is crucial because respect for public opinion is the basis of national development, and to overcome internal crises, all political forces must unite and initiate serious negotiations.
A central leader of the alliance, when contacted, told The News that the huddle also held lengthy deliberations with reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (its major component) public meeting on April 9 to mark the removal of Imran Khan’s government on this day in 2022.
“We made it clear to them (PTI) that you fixed this event without asking us about it while now such an important diplomatic activity is taking place in the federal capital. Will it be fine to go for such meeting?†he contended. Among others, the meeting was attended by Allama Raja Nasir Abbas (Leader of the Opposition in the Senate), PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, party’s additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Sahibzada Hassan Raza (head of Sunni Ittehad Council), Syed Zain Shah (head of Sindh United Party), Sajid Khan Tareen (senior leader Balochistan National Party-Mengal), Muhammad Zubair (former governor Sindh), ex-senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Dr Ammar Ali Jan (Chairman Huqoqool Khalq Party), TTAP Spokesman Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and PTI lawyer Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry.
On the occasion of May 1, the opposition alliance will hold rallies across the country to express solidarity with workers and present an alternative economic agenda for the revival of economy.
Expressing deep concern over the country’s economic situation, it was noted that inflation has severely affected the poor, farmers and labourers. In this regard, it was decided to unite farmers and labour organisations and launch a joint struggle.
The participants welcomed the two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US and expressed the hope that the parties will fully implement it, which will pave the way for lasting peace in the region. The meeting emphasised that a just solution to the problems of Iran, Lebanon, Syria and Gaza is indispensable for sustainable peace in the Middle East. The movement reiterated its commitment to play an effective role in promoting peace at the global level.
They hailed the Pakistan-Afghanistan talks held in China and said that serious dialogue and talks with neighbours are the best way for regional development and peace and security.
Expressing serious concern over the situation in Balochistan, it was demanded that the ongoing operation should be closed immediately, confidence building measures should be taken and a peaceful democratic environment should be restored.
In this regard, the immediate release of the leadership and workers of the Baloch Solidarity Committee was demanded. Moreover, the termination of cases against the head of Balochistan National Party-Mengal, Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal, and ending the alleged unfair use of resources of the province was also emphasised. The meeting welcomed the initiative of the Islamabad High Court to allow meeting Imran Khan and demanded that the Supreme Court and Islamabad High Court should hear all cases, bail and meeting related applications on a daily basis.
The forum decided to hold district-wise rallies across the country on April 25 in favour of the demands for the restoration of Constitution, release of political prisoners including Imran Khan and providing economic relief to the people.
The meeting demanded the release of activists arrested in the alleged “Moro case†of May 20, 2025, terming it political revenge and demanded abolition of Section 144 in Sindh.
