RAWALPINDI: Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema has rejected a request by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to hold a public rally at Liaquat Bagh, citing security concerns and the prevailing law and order situation.

The decision was formally communicated to the applicant in writing. According to the Deputy Commissioner’s response, the request was reviewed during a meeting of the District Intelligence Committee (DIC), where the current security environment was assessed in consultation with law enforcement agencies.

The committee concluded that holding a large public gathering under existing conditions could pose serious risks. Authorities warned that any untoward incident could result in loss of life and damage to property. The administration also noted that Section 144 is already in force across the district, further restricting public assemblies.

Officials highlighted that ensuring security for a rally at a sensitive venue like Liaquat Bagh would require significant resources. However, such arrangements are currently not feasible due to the ongoing energy crisis and the government’s austerity measures.

“In view of these circumstances, permission for the rally cannot be granted,” the statement said.

The request had been submitted by Khan Aqil Khan, General Secretary of PTI Rawalpindi district, seeking permission to hold the rally on April 9.

Earlier, the High Court had directed the deputy commissioner to decide on the application in accordance with the law.
