ISLAMABAD: In a significant move aimed at reviving the fortunes of national hockey, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has appointed former Pakistan full-back Manzoorul Hasan as the head coach of the national team, while legendary winger Samiullah Khan has been entrusted with the role of chief selector.

The reshuffle, finalized by PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani in consultation with the Professional Development Committee (PDC), marks a strategic shift towards empowering former Olympians to steer Pakistan hockey back to international prominence.

As part of the restructuring, Ayaz Mehmood, named head coach of the Under-21 side, and Qamar Ibrahim, as Under-18 head coach, have been assigned new responsibilities within the federation’s revamped setup. The changes reflect a broader vision to create a cohesive system linking junior and senior levels under experienced leadership.

Speaking to The News, Wani emphasized the importance of starting afresh and placing trust in those who have a deep-rooted connection with the game. “Look, it is time to move forward and hand over responsibilities to former Olympians who are eager to contribute,” he said. “I recently met Manzoorul Hasan in Lahore and discussed various aspects concerning the future of Pakistan hockey.”

Highlighting the scale of the transition, Wani noted that never before in the country’s hockey history have so many former Olympians been simultaneously engaged in key roles. “These stalwarts have now been given full authority to rebuild the national team and make it competitive against the best sides in the world,” he added.

According to well-placed sources, former Olympian Khawaja Junaid is expected to join the national team as coach, assisting Manzoorul Hasan. An official announcement regarding the complete coaching staff is anticipated in the coming days. Junaid, notably, guided Pakistan to a runner-up finish in the World Cup qualifiers, securing their place in the global event.

The selection committee under Samiullah Khan will include experienced names such as Naeem Akhtar, Kashif Jawad, Mohammad Khalid, Dr Atif Bashir, and Nasir Ali. In a move aimed at strengthening coordination, all head coaches of various national teams will also serve as members of the selection panel.

Sources further revealed that the PHF made earnest efforts to bring in a high-profile foreign coach. However, the plan could not materialize as most internationally reputed coaches are currently tied to long-term commitments with national or professional teams, leaving little room for new engagements.
