Two PTI leaders from Shangla eying Senate seat

ALPURI: Two leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from Shangla are eyeing the Senate seat which fell vacant after the disqualification of Murad Saeed.

Former provincial minister Shaukat Yousafzai has submitted application to the party’s parliamentary board to be considered for contesting the Senate electionHe is serving as PTI’s central deputy secretary for information, while Nawaz Mehmood Khan holds the position of provincial vice president.

In a statement, Shaukat Yousafzai said that submitting his application was his democratic right, adding that he would fully accept the board’s decision even if he is not awarded the party ticket.

He joined PTI in 1996 and contested the 1997 elections on the party ticket but lost.In 2013, he won a provincial assembly seat from Peshawar and became a provincial minister. In 2018, he was elected from Shangla and was again given a ministerial portfolio but lost in the 2024 election.

PTI leader Nawaz Mehmood Khan, a former candidate for the National Assembly and current provincial vice-president, has also decided to submit nomination papers for the Senate seat. Shangla currently has strong representation from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz including one Member of National Assembly, two members of the Provincial Assembly, and one senator.Among them are PMLN’s provincial president and federal minister Amir Muqam, and opposition leader in the provincial assembly, Dr Ibad.
