There has been, in my opinion, a muted reaction to the government’s high increase of the petrol, diesel and kerosene prices. However, protests might actually end up causing more suffering for the people. What the government can do is provide partial subsidies to bring some overall reduction to the present high prices. The government should also ensure that petrol pumps, particularly those in the rural areas, do not further fleece the hard-hit consumers by providing low-measured oil. Most importantly, the government should implement austerity by ensuring that officialdom and representatives give up some of their perks and privileges, such as large protocols.
