PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court Bar Association and the District Bar Association Peshawar have rejected the increase in petroleum product prices and called for a nationwide protest.
They have urged the Pakistan Bar Council and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council to announce a one-day strike across the country. The demand was made during separate meetings held on the previous day.
The meeting of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association was chaired by Amin-ur-Rehman Yousafzai, while the District Bar Association meeting was presided over by Qaiser Zaman. The meetings were attended by Imran Khan, Zahidullah Zahid, and Ashfaq Daudzai, among others.
During the meetings, participants condemned what they termed the “unjustified and illegal” increase in petroleum prices. They stated that despite Pakistani-flagged ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and entering the country, fuel prices continued to rise, which they described as incomprehensible.
The participants further noted that other countries were benefiting from cheaper oil imports from Iran and Russia, and stressed that Pakistan should also take advantage of such opportunities. They added that inflation had already made life difficult for the public, and the recent hike in petroleum prices had further aggravated the situation.
The bar associations urged the federal government to immediately restore previous petroleum prices and provide relief to the public. They also reiterated their call for a countrywide one-day strike in the interest of the general public to draw the government’s attention to the hardships faced by citizens.
