ISLAMABAD: The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has sought implementation reports on a Supreme Court decision from all parties, including the Pakistan Bar Council, provincial bar councils and Higher Education Commission, within two weeks.
A two-member FCC bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Rozi Khan heard a case on the condition of law colleges.
During the hearing, Justice Farooq remarked that the condition of law colleges and lawyers in Pakistan was very poor, adding that some Supreme Court lawyers lacked even basic legal knowledge yet still held licences.
Justice Rozi Khan remarked that in Balochistan, people do not even attend classes, and some law colleges consist of just one room where degrees are being sold.
A PBC representative claimed that improvements are being made. Lawyer Aneek Khattana said that conditions have worsened since 2020, though some progress includes the establishment of Directorate of Legal Education, training programmes for lawyers and a 50 percent passing criteria for the law graduation test. However, he emphasised that much improvement is still needed. Meanwhile, the court adjourned further hearing for a date-in-office after seeking implementation reports from the PBC and others.
