MULTAN: The Punjab government has ordered proceedings under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act, 2006 against five officers and doctors at the Nishtar Hospital on the charge of committing negligence, which spread Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
The Nishtar Medical College suspended a total of nine doctors in the light of an inquiry report. The government ordered Peeda proceedings against five officers and doctors after a suspected HIV-positive patient underwent surgery without prior screening alongside general patients at the hospital in Multan.
According to suspension orders, MS General Surgery Dr Irsa Arif, Chemical Pathologist Dr Sania Saeed, Orthopaedic Dr Muhammad Naeem Akhtar, Senior Registrar Dr Fariha Ahmed, Medical Officer Dr Shahbaz Anwar, Dr Muhammad Ali Jan and Charge Nurse Rida Zahra are among the individuals suspended on the recommendations of an inquiry committee.
Earlier, Nishtar Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mehnaz Khan Khakwani submitted the inquiry report to the Punjab secretary Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Department, which found the officers guilty of misconduct to observe SOPs of HIV screening control in the treatment of Muhammad Shahbaz, a resident of Multan.
