ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday, as President of the Security Council for July 2025, introduced the draft Annual Report of Security Council to the General Assembly seeking unanimous support of council members.
“Pakistan was entrusted with coordinating and preparing the introduction to this report. Our objective was not to have a perfunctory document, but a substantive and analytical account that faithfully reflects the council’s work, deliberations, challenges and outcomes during the reporting period. We also sought to provide greater clarity and context regarding the evolving situations confronting international peace and security, in which the council works,” said Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations.
He pointed out that Pakistan’s best effort had gone into this report to make it as comprehensive, objective and analytical as possible, believing that the council members and the wide membership would appreciate that there is always a room for more.
The annual report includes its activities, which will be considered for discussion by the UN General Assembly with the ambassador saying that this process is a vital instrument of transparency, accountability and institutional dialogue between the Security Council and the wider UN membership.
The council dealt with complex and interrelated crises across different regions of the world. And its agenda also reflected the gravity and scale of contemporary threats to international peace and security including ongoing and new conflicts, emerging threats, humanitarian crises and the range of responses from protection of civilians, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, the peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperation with regional and subregional organisations.
“Despite persistent conflicts, growing humanitarian emergencies and heightened geopolitical tensions, which at times complicated efforts to advance political settlements and collective action, the council continued to play a central role in promoting stability, supporting peace processes and reinforcing multilateral cooperation in pursuit of durable peace and security,” said the ambassador.
Earlier, at the UNSC Emergency Meeting on Ukraine at the request of Russia, Pakistan stated that from the very outset, it has favoured and advocated dialogue and diplomacy for peaceful settlement of this conflict. Bringing lasting peace, it pointed out would require commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and a focus on finding a mutually acceptable solution that corresponds to the legitimate security interests of all sides, and the relevant multilateral agreements.
In this context, Pakistan reiterated the hope that the parties would resume the US facilitated dialogue process at the earliest. Pakistan will continue to support all efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, durable and peaceful resolution of this conflict.
Any further delay in reaching a mutually agreeable settlement will only add to the agony of the affected populations, a tragic outcome, that could very well be avoided if there is a ceasefire in place and the parties were to return to the dialogue table.
