ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a high-profile human smuggler allegedly responsible for the death of several migrants in the Morocco boat disaster.

The suspect, identified as Qasid Ali, was arrested during a targeted operation on Sunday after having been previously listed in the FIA’s Red Book — a registry reserved for the country’s most wanted criminals.

According to an FIA Headquarters spokesperson, Ali served as a key operative in an international human trafficking syndicate that utilised a systematic pattern of exploitation. Investigation reveals that the suspect allegedly defrauded citizens by charging up to Rs3.3 million per person under the false promise of safe passage to Spain. Instead of reaching Europe, the victims were illegally routed to African nations, including Mauritania, where they were reportedly subjected to forced labor, physical torture, and inhumane living conditions.

Investigation further indicates that the smuggling network eventually abandoned the migrants on perilous sea routes after falsely promising transport to Spain. This negligence led to a fatal boat accident in which several individuals lost their lives.

Qasid Ali faces many serious charges, including human trafficking, extortion, financial fraud, forced labor, and involvement in migrant deaths.

FIA officials have categorized the arrest as a major breakthrough in their ongoing mission to dismantle transnational criminal networks.

The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance for human smuggling, stating that operations will continue until all operatives within the syndicate were brought to justice.
