KARACHI: US President Donald Trump on Thursday again asserted that he helped defuse tensions between India and Pakistan, referring to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while discussing his role in the May 2025 war.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting — the first since the Israel/US-Iran war began — Trump brought up his asserted role in mediating a ceasefire in the Pakistan-India war in May 2025. Drawing comparisons with other ongoing conflicts, including Ukraine, he said it would be a “great honour” to resolve that war as well.

Saying that he had “solved other ones [wars] in one day”, Trump added that “we stopped one that was starting... India and Pakistan”.

He said that “the prime minister of Pakistan -- a very fine gentleman -- said [that] President Trump solved something that was going to cost 10 million lives”.

Trump continued: “Two nuclear nations. Those were complicated, but we got them done quickly...”

His remarks mark yet another instance of the American president publicly crediting himself with averting a potentially catastrophic conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The comments come at a time when Pakistan is seen as playing an increasingly significant diplomatic role, particularly as it is said to occupy a key position in ongoing efforts to facilitate mediation between Washington and Tehran.

Observers note that it is relatively rare for a sitting US president to so openly and repeatedly praise a Pakistani prime minister during a public, on-air cabinet meeting discussion.
