ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is set to deliberate on key constitutional reforms during its Congress meeting scheduled for March 27 at the Pakistan Sports Complex, in what is being seen as a significant step towards restructuring the federation’s governance framework.
According to sources, the meeting agenda goes beyond routine proceedings such as opening remarks and confirmation of minutes from the previous session. The central focus will be on proposed amendments aimed at streamlining the federation’s administrative structure and improving overall efficiency.
The PHF leadership, under President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, is reportedly keen to introduce reforms that clearly delineate administrative, financial, and technical domains within the organization.
The move is part of a broader effort to ensure a more professional, transparent, and result-oriented system in the management of hockey affairs in the country. While the exact number and nature of the proposed amendments remain undisclosed, insiders suggest that the idea of establishing a Governing Board, on the lines of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is under serious consideration.
Such a board, likely comprising around 10 members, is expected to enhance decision-making efficiency and accountability within the federation. “No formal proposal has yet been shared with Congress members.
However, the possibility of forming a Governing Board similar to the PCB model cannot be ruled out. We expect to receive details of the proposed changes ahead of the meeting to allow for thorough review and discussion,” a Congress member told The News on condition of anonymity.
In a parallel development, administrative adjustments have also been made within the federation. The official notice convening the Congress session bears the name of acting secretary Syed Shakil Shah, who has assumed interim responsibilities following the three-month leave of Brigadier (retd) Akmal.
It is pertinent to note that the PHF is currently operating under an ad hoc arrangement through a special notification issued by the Prime Minister, who serves as the federation’s Patron-in-Chief. Consequently, all major decisions, including proposed constitutional amendments and interim appointments, require formal endorsement from the Congress.
The March 27 meeting is therefore crucial, not only for internal restructuring but also for securing the necessary backing to maintain official correspondence with the International Hockey Federation (FIH), ensuring Pakistan’s continued engagement in international hockey affairs.
