ALPURI: Torrential rains in Shangla have intensified into a severe storm, causing widespread disruption across the district.

Continuous heavy downpours over several hours led to many landslides, blocking the main road and several link roads. Local hydropower stations were also affected, plunging the valley into complete darkness.

Officials said that the increasing water flow in streams and rain-fed channels was causing further risk in low-lying areas. District authorities have deployed machinery and relevant departments to clear debris and reopen blocked roads to restore communication.

The storm and lightning strikes severely damaged the electricity infrastructure. Over a dozen power lines have fallen, and three main transmission poles, each 45 feet high, were severely impacted, resulting in a prolonged power outage. For the past 24 hours, most of Shangla remained in darkness.

The extreme weather has also disrupted communication networks. Mobile phone services and other communication systems in many areas were down, making it difficult for residents to stay connected.

In addition to heavy rains, hailstorm was also reported in some areas while higher mountainous regions recorded light snowfall, significantly increasing the intensity of cold conditions.

Authorities continued to monitor rivers and rain-fed channels as water levels rise, posing increased risk to vulnerable communities.
