Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said 2026 will be the year of completion of development projects in Karachi and around Rs70 billion will be spent this year to improve the city’s infrastructure.

Talking to media representatives after performing the groundbreaking of several development projects in the Malir and Korangi areas, he said an underpass would be constructed on Jinnah Avenue in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and Munawar Chowrangi Underpass would be completed within one year.

The mayor performed the groundbreaking of the Azeempura Flyover, improvement and rehabilitation of Liaquat Road (Khokhrapar No 5 to Khokhrapar C-Area), Mehran Depot Road (Jinnah Avenue to Begum Khursheed Road), Hashim Raza Road (Jinnah Avenue to KTC Tea Company), improvement and rehabilitation of Jamia Millia Road and other development works.

Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, members of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation City Council, elected representatives and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Wahab said the construction of a flyover at the Azeempura intersection and improvement of adjoining roads had formally begun. The project included road rehabilitation, drainage and electrification from the Malir River Bridge to Shama Shopping Centre in Shah Faisal Town, which would significantly reduce traffic congestion in the area.

He said the total cost of the project was approximately Rs1,477 million and it would be completed under the KMC’s supervision. The flyover would be approximately 700 metres long.

Similarly, a 625-metre dual-track road would be constructed from Shahrah-e-Bhutto to Shah Faisal Roundabout. Reconstruction of Shah Faisal Roundabout, parking areas and improvement of adjoining roads are also included in the scheme.

Wahab said the flyover and intersection improvements would help improve traffic flow in Shah Faisal Town, Korangi and nearby areas, providing significant relief to commuters. The project also includes an improved drainage system with new drains and an effective rainwater disposal mechanism.

The mayor said the Azeempura intersection was an important route connecting Shah Faisal Colony with Korangi, and a large number of commuters from Korangi Industrial Area also used the thoroughfare to reach Sharea Faisal.

He said efforts would be made to complete the flyover within 100 days.

Wahab stated that improvement and rehabilitation work on Liaquat Road, Mehran Depot Road and Hashim Raza Road would also be undertaken at a total cost of Rs 205.660 million.

He also laid the foundation stone for the project for improvement and rehabilitation of Jamia Millia Road. He said that work had begun on the Jamia Millia Road project from Malir 15 to Millat Mor, which would provide improved transportation facilities to hundreds of thousands of residents of Malir and surrounding areas.
