LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a plan to clear flood zones across the province within three months as part of strengthened flood management measures.

The decision was taken during a special meeting on post-flood management chaired by the chief minister, where relevant departments presented a detailed briefing. She directed authorities to strictly enforce a ban on construction within river passages and waterways, warning that no financial assistance would be provided if illegal structures built in water channels collapse during floods.

The meeting also approved restructuring of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, with the creation of eight new wings aimed at enhancing disaster response capacity.

Participants endorsed a proposal to construct 17 mini dams at various locations across the province. Plans were also approved to enhance water storage capacity at Kalabagh Dam site and Sidhnai Barrage, while the chief minister directed the introduction of inflatable dam technology.

Approval was further granted for establishing District Emergency Operation Centres, regional disaster centres and warehouses, along with the provision of modern equipment to Rescue 1122 for flood-related operations.

Officials informed the meeting that rehabilitation work on flood-affected infrastructure has been completed. A total of 186 roads spanning 563 kilometres, 446 culverts and one bridge damaged during recent floods have been restored.

The briefing also revealed that along the province’s five major rivers, 1,990 areas fall within high-risk flood zones, 1,278 in medium-risk zones and 3,169 in low-risk zones. Authorities added that 183 irrigation projects are currently underway, while desilting will be carried out on 298 drains and flood channels and 67 drainage systems.

The chief minister was also presented with a comprehensive report outlining short-, medium- and long-term flood management strategies for the province.

Separately, the chief minister extended greetings to the people of the Saraiki region on Saraiki Ajrak Day, saying, “Sarey bhraawan koo Saraiki dinh di mubarak thive.”

In her message, Maryam Nawaz described the Saraiki Ajrak as one of her favourite cultural symbols representing sincerity, love and warmth. She said the Ajrak reflects the centuries-old cultural identity and rich traditions of the Saraiki region.

She added that the culture and civilisation of the Saraiki belt embody values of unity, affection and harmony, noting that the vibrant colours of the Ajrak bring a soothing feeling to the eyes.

Maryam Nawaz further said that Punjab remains a custodian of Pakistan’s diverse cultures and ancient traditions, adding that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) has played a significant role in promoting development in South Punjab.
