KARACHI: The Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) has welcomed the significant increase in the loan ceiling under the ‘Mera Ghar Mera Aashiana’ scheme, saying it will help meet rising demand for housing and support growth in the construction sector.
Chairperson of ABAD Muhammad Hassan Bakhshi said raising the loan limit from Rs3.5 million to Rs10 million offered renewed hope to prospective homeowners. The move would not only benefit thousands of families seeking to own a home but also generate employment and stimulate broader economic activity, he added.
Bakhshi said the construction industry serves as a backbone of the economy, with more than 72 industries directly or indirectly linked to it. Increased construction activity would support sectors such as cement, steel (rebar), tiles, paint and electrical equipment, contributing to greater economic stability.
He noted that the construction sector currently accounts for about 2.3 per cent of Pakistan’s gross domestic product (GDP). With policy continuity and adequate support, its contribution could expand significantly, providing a strong boost to the national economy.
Bakhshi expressed hope that the government would continue taking practical steps to promote housing development, enabling more people to achieve home ownership while fostering sustainable economic growth.
