Meaningful critique

The viral case of Aina Wazir highlights a significant divide between reactionary advocacy and the complex realities of North Waziristan. While many self-described liberals used the eight-year-old’s story to criticise cultural suppression, this activism often remains performative and selective, focusing only on high-profile incidents that suit a specific media narrative. Similarly, the reaction from certain religious figures was equally problematic. These leaders often showed a disproportionate obsession with restricting women’s sports while remaining silent on the more pressing humanitarian and social crises facing women in the region. By ignoring the broader suffering of the population, both sides of the debate have failed to address the deeper, systemic forms of oppression that exist in conflict-ridden areas.

A meaningful critique must move beyond treating a single video as an isolated case study for ideological point-scoring. To truly support girls like Aina Wazir, the focus must shift from temporary media outrage to a sustained effort that addresses the structural causes of deprivation.
