Karachi police chief Azad Khan on Thursday refuted reports circulating on social media regarding terrorism threats to malls. However, he said there is a general threat to the city for which they had already upgraded security.

Talking to The News, Additional IG Khan said there is no authenticity in reports circulating on social media. However, he said, there is a general threat which surfaces whenever there is a tension at borders.

Due to the threat perception, he said he had ordered adopting extra security measures throughout the city, including at malls, bazaars and worship places. Moreover, the authorities have been directed to review the security plan, expand the intelligence network, take immediate action on available information and avert any untoward situation.

Officials said the presence of terrorists from banned organisations has been revealed in recent questioning from the arrested terrorists, the movement of terrorists through major highways have also been recorded, information about the alliance of terrorist organisations including the banned BLA has been reported, and their targets include government buildings, offices and other sensitive places.

They added that the Sindh IGP and the additional IG Karachi have issued instructions to the police authorities to be vigilant at all times and tighten security measures, according to a confidential report.

An intelligence report claims that Indian and Afghan intelligence agencies are involved in financing terrorists. Information about the mutual alliance of five other groups including the BLA and BLF has also come to light.

Senior police officials have directed all police stations to intensify combing operations based on intelligence information. Strict surveillance has also been recommended on smuggling routes from Afghanistan.

Officials say citizens should immediately report any suspicious activity to the relevant agencies so that any untoward incident can be dealt with in a timely manner.
