The Sindh Bar Council (SBC) has demanded of President Asif Ali Zardari to remove Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, saying that he has proved himself for representing the federation.

In a meeting on Tuesday, the council resolved that involvement of the governor in political activities and using the Governor House for political activities were in violation of the constitution. It demanded immediate removal of the governor in light of the serious concerns it raised.

SBC members also called upon the Pakistan Peoples Party to clearly state its party position regarding power-sharing arrangements in the federal government with political parties that have advocated narratives relating to a division of Sindh.

They said the people of Sindh deserve clarity and assurance that the province’s unity and constitutional status will not be compromised under any political arrangements. The SBC maintained that constitutional offices must remain neutral and above partisan politics and that the integrity and unity of Sindh is non-negotiable.

The Sindh High Court Bar Association also condemned the statement of the governor, which it said had caused serious concern and unrest among the legal fraternity and people of Sindh. The association said that remarks of the governor are unwarranted and against the spirit of the constitution as he undermines historical, legal and administrative status of Karachi as an integral part of the Sindh.

The SHCBA said in a statement that the bar fully supports the resolution adopted by the Sindh Assembly wherein it categorically reaffirmed that Karachi shall remain an inseparable and integral part of Sindh under all circumstances.

It further reiterated that any attempt, suggestion or statement aimed at altering the constitutional status of Karachi is unacceptable and will be resisted by the legal fraternity through all lawful means. The SHCBA called upon the authorities to refrain from making such statements and to respect constitutional mandate, democratic norms and the sentiments of the people of Sindh.
