A man allegedly involved in breaking into a house and taking a woman and her young daughter hostage died after falling from the sixth floor of a residential building in the Risala area on Wednesday.
According to police, the incident occurred at Burhani Compound, Chaliya Street, near Al-Fatimi Building. Police and rescue personnel shifted the body to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities. SHO Faisal Jafri said the deceased was identified as Hanan, aged between 45 and 50, a resident of the Nagan Chowrangi area of New Karachi.
A case had been registered on the complaint of Juma Bibi, wife of Syed Wahid Shah. In her statement, the complainant alleged that her husband was not at home when the suspect forcibly entered the house. She stated that the suspect allegedly tried to assault her and struck her on the head when she resisted. He then reportedly attacked her with a sewing machine, injuring both her and her six-year-old daughter.
According to the complainant, when she raised an alarm, the suspect locked the house from inside and held them hostage. Neighbours gathered outside after hearing the commotion. The police said the suspect later attempted to flee and entered the building’s basement. While trying to escape, he reportedly fell from the sixth floor and sustained fatal injuries.
The SHO said statements of neighbours had been recorded, which supported the complainant’s version. He added that the suspect appeared to have entered the house with criminal intent. The complainant, her husband and other residents stated that they did not know the deceased. When the police contacted the suspect’s family, his son claimed that his father was not mentally stable. The police said further investigation is under way to examine all aspects of the case.
