LAHORE: Pakistan’s mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed has revealed the philosophy behind his bowling and path to the World Cup

Sharing personal insights in a podcast, he discussed his journey, struggles, and preparations for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in Sri Lanka. Abrar explained that his approach is rooted in reading the pitch and anticipating the batter’s intent before delivering the ball. He emphasized that in white-ball cricket, particularly T20s, he relies on match situations and scoreboard pressure to predict when a batter will attempt a big shot. His ability to adapt quickly has made him one of Pakistan’s most effective spinners across formats.

On Abrar’s personal life, recently married, he joked that life hasn’t changed much except that his clothes and meals are now always ready. He spoke warmly about his wife’s care but noted that “there is no substitute for a mother’s love.”

He also revealed that his “Harry Potter” nickname was coined by Ramiz Raja in 2017 due to his thick glasses before he grew a beard. Abrar’s trademark “shushing” and neck-movement celebration was another topic of discussion. While Mohammad Rizwan once advised him to stop, Babar Azam encouraged him to continue, saying it added flair to his persona on the field.

Looking ahead to the World Cup in Sri Lanka, Abrar said he is mentally and physically prepared. He admitted that sitting out previous tournaments was difficult, but it taught him how to handle international pressure. Pakistan’s training in Lahore is being conducted on pitches designed to replicate Sri Lankan conditions, ensuring the squad is ready for the challenge.
