DUBAI: Shopping and payments in the United Arab Emirates are set to become simpler, as people will no longer need to carry cash, bank cards or cheque books.
Payments can now be made using facial recognition or palm authentication.
The Central Bank of the UAE has launched the new biometric digital payment system as part of the country’s push towards smart, secure and cashless transactions. Under the system, customers can verify their identity and complete payments instantly without using a phone or physical card.
The technology has already been successfully tested at the Dubai Land Department, where it was used for property transactions, including buying and selling of homes and land. Officials said the trial was completed smoothly and with full confidence.
“This system will make payments faster, safer and more convenient for everyone,” a UAE banking official said.
Experts believe biometric payments could soon be rolled out across the UAE, allowing residents and visitors to shop, book properties and complete transactions with greater ease.
