ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek Tahafuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) on Tuesday strongly condemned the “continuous, deliberate and unconstitutional” curbs imposed on the meeting of the sisters with former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and the “shameful act of keeping Ms Aleema Khan and other sisters in unjust detention upon their return.”
In a statement, the opposition alliance spokesman Akhunzada Hussain noted that the continuous deprivation of the Khan’s sisters, especially Ms Aleema Khan and other family members, from the constitutional, legal and fundamental human right to meet their brother was not only extremely worrying but also “a clear violation” of the Constitution, court orders and the law.
“This practice is tantamount to a clear insult to the sanctity of family ties, human values and Islamic and moral principles. Today (Tuesday), when Khan’s sisters came to meet him peacefully and constitutionally, they were not only denied this right but were also illegally kept in unjust detention upon their return. This act is another clear example of the brutal and illegitimate use of state power, which is aimed at intimidating citizens and further intensifying political revenge,” he contended.
The TTAP spokesman said that the opposition alliance vehemently condemned depriving citizens of their fundamental rights, restricting peaceful movement and treating women in this manner, which could not be acceptable in any civilised, constitutional and democratic society.
He further said the alliance demands that Imran Khan and his family members should be immediately granted their constitutional right to meet each other without any hindrance.
“Full respect for the fundamental rights of peaceful assembly and free movement should be ensured and immediate and effective legal action should be taken against all officers and responsible institutions involved in arbitrary detention and violation of the Constitution,” he demanded.
“We strongly appeal to the country’s judicial system, legal community, civil society, media and the informed public to raise their voices against this blatant violation of the Constitution and fundamental human rights,” he concluded.
