NA panel defers ICT LG bill

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control considered the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and deferred the matter, with directions to the Ministry of Law and Justice to present a consolidated bill in a future meeting.

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control held its meeting under the chairmanship of Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz at the Parliament House on Tuesday.

The committee considered the Islamabad Capital Territory Senior Citizens (Amendment) Bill, 2025, moved by Dr Sharmila Faruqui, and approved it with amendments, subject to the Ministry’s assurance that the requisite rules would be framed in six months. It would enable senior citizens to avail concessions on the basis of a valid CNIC.

It deferred consideration of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2025 (Government Bill), Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2025 (Government Bill) to the next meeting for further consideration and recommendations.

The committee expressed grave concern over unnecessary internal checkpoints and unprofessional conduct by some police personnel causing severe inconvenience to the public. They called for urgent resolution of traffic problems on Lathrar Road at Taramri Chowk and Ali Pur Bank stop, IGP Road, Constitution Avenue, Chungi No. 26, Airport Road due to private truck stoppages.

After detailed discussion, the committee directed restricting checkpoints at entry and exit points and adopting digital traffic management solutions at the earliest.
