LAHORE: In a major announcement ahead of the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Luke Ronchi has been appointed as the new head coach of Islamabad United, the three-time champions of the tournament. The PSL season is set to begin on March 26, marking a historic chapter for the franchise as it welcomes back one of its most iconic figures.

The news was confirmed by franchise owner Ali Naqvi on social media platform X, where he expressed gratitude to fans for their unwavering support and excitement for the team’s new era. “Thank you to all the fans for being a part of making Islamabad United the most successful team in PSL. Your belief and passion have helped build this legacy with us. Now it’s time to step into the new era with a true Sheru returning home. Welcome back, Head Coach Luke Ronchi,” Naqvi wrote.

Ronchi is no stranger to Islamabad United or the PSL. He represented the franchise as a player across three seasons from 2018 to 2020, becoming one of the most impactful overseas stars in the league. Having played 31 matches, he scored 1,020 runs with a strike rate of 166.12 while scoring 10 half-centuries. His aggressive batting style and consistency made him a fan favorite, and his return in a coaching capacity is seen as a continuation of his strong bond with the franchise. At 44, Ronchi steps into a leadership role that will see him guide Islamabad United through a competitive PSL season. With his experience as both an international cricketer and a former PSL star, the franchise hopes his appointment will bring tactical sharpness and renewed energy to the squad.

Islamabad United, already the most successful team in PSL history with three titles, will be aiming to extend their dominance under Ronchi’s stewardship. His appointment is being hailed as a symbolic “homecoming,” reinforcing the franchise’s culture of loyalty and continuity.
